A Level Playing Field is a comprehensive consulting guide to the law of Title IX which provides
the most up-to-date coverage available of the specific steps which must be taken to bring
a school into compliance with Title IX as it is enforced by the U.S. Office for Civil
Rights and the Federal Courts. Included in A Level
Playing Field are all of the following special features: |

|
- Title IX Self Audit Materials: A complete self-audit package containing all of the forms, checklists, and
surveys needed to perform a thorough, in-house assessment of your institution's present
level of compliance with all of the various Title IX tests and standards. The Self-Audit
Materials mirror the review which would be done by the OCR and thereby empowers you to
proactively prevent problems before they ever occur in the first place.
- Title IX Compliance Framework: A framework combining all of the sources of law and other information
about the OCR's approach to Title IX enforcement into an easy-to-follow roadmap to Title
IX compliance which provides practical, "real world" solutions to many of the
most common Title IX problems for schools. Designed for use with the Self-Audit Materials
to develop both a short-term and a long-term plan for Title IX compliance at your
institution.
- Title IX Video Program: A one-hour video presentation designed to guide you through every aspect
of the self-audit process and the strategic planning process for Title IX compliance at
your school.
- Title IX Court Cases & OCR Settlement Agreements: An extensive set of summaries of the landmark court cases and OCR
settlement agreements dealing with Title IX, each with a special emphasis on the
preventative medicine lessons which can be learned from the case.
- Title IX Frequently Asked Questions (& Answers!): A comprehensive collection of FAQs compiled through interviews with
athletics administrators, coaches, Title IX compliance officers, college presidents,
school district superintendents, and attorneys who represent universities and school
districts. Together, these FAQs and answers provide detailed guidance through many of the
most difficult issue areas related to Title IX compliance.
- Title IX & Gender Equity Resource Portfolio: A set of gender equity support resources, including contact info for the
national governing bodies for all sports, contact info for all OCR offices, a bibliography
of Title IX books and WebSites, and the full-text version of all of the key original
sources of Title IX law.

PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE
In a recent article in Athletic Business Magazine's column
titled Sports Law Report, a Title IX expert wrote that "schools should do
Title IX reviews before circumstances demand them. Recent legal challenges suggest that
athletics administrators would be well-advised to be proactive ... if a Title IX complaint
goes to court, the school may be placed in the unfortunate position of having courts
dictate how they will achieve compliance. Such schools not only lose flexibility, they
spend significant sums of money on their legal defense that could have been allocated to
improving the very athletics programs that have become the subject of the lawsuit." |
A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD - IN OUR OPINION
"A
Level Playing Field, with its Self-Audit Materials and Title IX Video Program, is an
extremely valuable resource for athletics administrators ... it provides the most recent
and up-to-date information about Title IX ... in the past, there has been little guidance
to assist institutions regarding Title IX compliance issues and OCR investigations, but
this book has changed that ... it provides real-world solutions that will help athletic
directors to fulfill their Title IX responsibilities and survive an investigation by the
OCR ... the section on Self-Audit Materials alone is worth the price of the entire
book."
Interscholastic Athletics Administration Magazine
Book Review - Spring 1998 Issue (At Page 31)
"An
excellent publication. We have examined other such books and A Level Playing Field
is the best we've ever seen. The Self-Audit Materials, Frequently Asked Questions,
Compliance Framework and Red Flag sections are especially useful. And the Video Program
guides you through every step of the self-assessment process and provides practical
suggestions to help you deal with the problem areas you discover. Talk to anyone who has
been through an OCR Investigation ... it costs a lot less money and it takes a lot less
time to do a Title IX review and set up a Title IX plan of action to prevent problems from
arising in the first place. This book will definitely help schools with that
process."
Susan S. True - Asst. Executive Dir. & Gender Equity Coordinator
National Federation Of State High School Associations
"A
Level Playing Field is an incredibly valuable, one-of-a-kind resource for athletic
administrators. The Self-Audit Materials and the Video Program provide all of the
information that any school needs in order to understand the details of Title IX law and
the OCR's approach to enforcing Title IX. And throughout the book, solutions are
provided to common Title IX compliance challenges that all schools struggle with. Every
school should have a copy on hand."
